Scleral lenses are large diameter rigid gas permeable (RGP) therapeutic devices, ranging from 15mm to 25mm in diameter. Scleral lenses are designed to rest on the less sensitive sclera, thereby avoiding all contact with the cornea. The lens creates a tear reservoir over the cornea, providing excellent comfort and vision. Scleral lens treatment at Envision Eye Care is often indicated for patients with various ocular surface pathologies, as they provide corneal protection and vision improvement. In addition, patients with irregular refractive errors also benefit from scleral lens treatment.
Scleral lenses provide optimal vision improvement by “correcting” the irregular cornea. The lens vaults the irregular/pathological cornea entirely, in essence, creating a “new corneal surface”. Patients with keratoconus, pellucid-marginal degeneration, post-refractive surgeries, corneal transplants, corneal scars, high refractive errors, and more find excellent improvement in vision with scleral lens therapy.
Corneal protection is another beneficial feature of scleral lens treatment. The tear reservoir behind the sclera lens bathes the cornea in a fluid, which provides excellent comfort and protection. Patients with ocular surface diseases such as Sjogren’s syndrome, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, graft versus host disease (GVHD), ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, neurotrophic corneal disease, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, severe dry eye syndrome, and more benefit from scleral lens therapy.
